Trim the Wood/ Cotton Wick: Before lighting, ensure your wick is trimmed to approximately 1/4 inch. This helps maintain an even burn and minimizes soot. For wood wicks, ALWAYS try to use a long neck lighter & light where the wax and wick meets- not at the top of the wick.
